Lifeline is a program supported by the Federal Communications Commission providing subsidies to eligible people (or households with an eligible person) for either land-line, cell phone, or internet services (broadband). You may only get this for one of these three services. You may be eligible to get a free cell phone as part of this program!
Which company provides this service may vary by where you live. Be sure to compare what these different providers offer, as the benefits are not all the same! If you are applying, be sure to confirm what cell phone towers the provider uses, as coverage may vary by which tower (Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, ATT, etc) you will be getting service from. If you don’t know which is best – ask a neighbor who has a cell phone who their provider is, and if the coverage is good.
More information is available about who qualifies, and how to apply for this program at USC’s (Universal Service Administration Company) Lifeline site. This site can help you determine if you qualify, and who provides service in your area.
